The Eastern Cape’s most incredible national parks

Hugging South Africa’s stunning coastline, the Eastern Cape is a world of its own. Here, nearly 170 000 kilometres of diverse landscape marry to create a breathtaking province where nature thrives. From desolate desert horizons to snow-capped mountain ranges, this province is peppered with wild and wonderful adventures. To experience the Eastern Cape in all its splendour, make a stop at one of these incredible national parks.

Mountain Zebra National Park

Once on the brink of extinction, the endangered Cape mountain zebra found refuge in this protected park of which it was named after. The Mountain Zebra National Park is nestled in the heart of the Karoo and gives travellers a chance to come face-to-face with South Africa’s wild side on game drives, 4x4 safaris and guided hikes. The park is not only a sanctuary for the striped creatures but for a number of other indigenous wildlife such as black wildebeest, red hartebeest, kudu and springbok. If you’re lucky you might even spot a cheetah crouching in the rocky outcrops that dominate this rugged region.

Camdeboo National Park

Located in Karoo’s Snow Mountains, the Camdeboo National Park gives travellers a look into an otherworldly realm moulded by nature hundreds of millions of years ago. People flock here each year to soak up these sprawling plains from the Valley of Desolation viewpoint. Witness the spectacular dolerite columns which dominate this valley and spot Cape mountain zebra, Black Eagles as well as the world’s heaviest flying bird, the Kori Bustard.

Tsitsikamma National Park

Forming part of the Garden Route National Park, the Tsitsikamma National Park offers visitors the best of the outdoors, with reefs, rivers and flourishing fynbos forests all in one breathtaking location. Explore this wild coast on foot on the famous Ottery Trail or kayak along the mesmerising coast and catch sight of dolphins, porpoises and the Cape clawless otter in the crystal blue water.

Addo Elephant National Park

As the third-largest national park in the country, Addo Elephant National Park isn’t short of excitement. The park was established as a haven for the endangered gentle giants which has helped the dwindling population grow from just 11 to over 600. Watch these incredible creatures roam amongst great buffalos, rhinos and the rare flightless dung beetle.
