How to keep your children entertained at home

Over the past month, South Africans across the country have been given the added challenge of keeping their kids entertained, while at the same time adapting to working from home.

Have you run out of ideas to keep your kids busy? Try some of the activities in this list.

How to keep your children entertained at home

  1. Colouring in

This is a timeless favourite, one which is becoming popular for adults as well. There is plenty of educational benefits such as colour learning which can be reinforced if you use colour-by-numbers style colouring pages. A quick search online will give you plenty of options to download

  1. Cooking or Baking

This one takes a fair bit of supervision but it can be a really fun way to bond with your children. Perhaps you can teach them your family recipe for rusks, muffins or even a chocolate cake. This can also be a lovely way to teach your children about different forms of measurement while they get their hands dirty.

  1. Counting

Keep their minds ticking by having them do various counting exercises while they are still at home. You can find a few free printables online.

  1. LEGO

This one can keep them busy for hours! It’s great to get their creative juices flowing while also aiding in the development of structural understanding. Just make sure they pack them away. Make sure you teach them how to pack the pieces away as standing on a Lego piece in the dark is no fun.

  1. Goo

There are countless YouTube channels and Instagram accounts that can tell you all about Goo! It’s a great way to create a form of a science experiment at home and there are plenty of goo recipes that can be found on the internet.

  1. Cardboard boxes

Something as simple as a box can keep your younger children entertained for hours. A box can be anything from a rocket ship to an island, so let your child’s mind run free with all the possibilities! To take it one step further, you could let them decorate their box. If you need some boxes, then we’ve got your covered with a variety of different sized boxes that are sold in our stores.

  1. Puzzles

What’s great about puzzles is that you can start one and come back to it later whenever you have the chance. For your kids, it’s a great way to develop their problem solving skills while also keeping them occupied for ages. Start small though – don’t jump straight into a 5 000 piece one!

One thing we have all learnt about having kids at home full time, is that clutter soon gathers in rooms all over the house. Now is actually the perfect time to consider how best to declutter your home and prepare for life after lockdown. Plan your rooms one by one and decide what you can set aside, what you can donate and what you should store.

If it is storage you need, call us today on 0861 18 18 18 and a friendly member of our team will help.
