Tips to help with the move abroad

Whether you’re relocating to the UK or exploring the life of a digital nomad in Australia, moving overseas requires a little bit of preparation. Moving to a new location is an exciting opportunity to start on a clean slate, experience new cultures and dive into a new challenge.

There are a few key considerations to keep in mind to make sure that the process is smooth and effortless.

Visit the location beforehand

If possible, visit the location beforehand. This will help to put your mind at ease about the place that you’re going to settle down to live in. Certain factors like language, availability of nearby schools, weather conditions and housing opportunities can all be assessed with a short trip. If this isn’t possible, then you can also do in-depth research online. Think long and hard about why you are choosing that location - is the grass really greener?

Check your passport and visa requirements

Depending on where you’re moving to, there could be certain visa requirements to consider, especially if you’re planning to work in the country. For example, South Africans need a visa to enter the United Kingdom for travel, and additional permission and documentation to work while they are there. You’ll also need to make sure that your passports are valid (and that you have a plan to renew them if needed). Of course you need to consider the impacts of the pandemic and your freedom to travel under certain restrictions.

Plan ahead for healthcare

Having a healthcare plan is an important factor. You’ll have to check with your current health care provider to see if they will cover you while you make the move. Research into health care options in your new destination is also important for peace of mind and in case of emergency.

Set up your phone and bank providers

Another two service providers to consider are your phone and banking providers. Make sure to contact your current service providers and cancel any agreement that you have currently. It’s also important to do your research so that you can set up the same agreements in your new location.

Prepare your belongings

Once you’ve got all of your documentation and administration sorted out, it’s time to start packing and preparing your home. There are a few important questions that you’ll have to consider such as whether you’ll be selling your home, renting it out, keeping your belongings in household storage, selling them and starting afresh or transporting them overseas.
