10 packing tips for a stress-free home move

The idea of moving to a new home is always exciting, but when it comes time to pack it can feel like a never-ending chore. From cups and plates to clothes and furniture, the list of items to pack can seem endless. With so much to remember, it’s easy to forget something behind or lose it along the way, making your move even more stressful and costly. So, what is the right way to pack your belongings for an effortless home move?

Here are our top 10 tips for packing up your home:

1. Make an inventory list

Before you even start packing up your home, you must create a detailed list of everything in your home. This will help you keep track of the items you have already packed, reducing the likelihood of items being left behind or lost during the move.

2. Start small

With so many household items to pack, it can feel incredibly overwhelming. When faced with a huge task, it’s always best to take a step back, breathe, and start small. By packing the smaller items first, you can declutter your home and free up enough space to move your larger furniture and appliances out with ease.

3. Keep. Throw out. Donate

To avoid moving items you don’t need or want anymore to your new house, sort your items into categories. Have a large box dedicated to old clothes or items you’d like to donate and another for junk that cannot be given away. When throwing out these items, ensure that they are not hazardous materials such as old batteries. If they are not disposed of correctly, they can pollute or harm the environment.

4. One room at a time

To avoid boxes and belongings scattered throughout the house, start with one room first. Once you have packed up the entire room, you can move on to the next. This will help you keep your belongings in order, saving you valuable time and energy.

5. Box it up

Dinnerware and fragile items can be easily broken if not packed correctly. However, during a home move, it can be difficult to find time to stock up on quality packaging products. With Stor-Age’s home delivery service, you can get quality boxes, bubble wrap, tape and any other packaging essentials delivered straight to your door.

6. Label everything

If you don’t keep track of which items are packed where you can waste hours searching for things or even accidentally throw them out. By labelling all your boxes and including a detailed list of everything inside, you’ll not only save time but have the peace of mind that everything is packed and ready.

7. Take your time

One of the worst things you can do during a home move is rush. This widens the margin of error and you'll have a higher chance of forgetting something behind or packing it in the wrong box. Make sure you start packing a few weeks before your move so that you can take your time and check everything.

8. Fill the gaps

Use soft items as cushioning for fragile objects and to fill gaps. These items can be anything from clothes to newspapers and are excellent for securing your valuables and minimising damage during the move.

9. Separate essentials

Between work and running a household, it can take weeks before you unpack everything into your new home. Therefore it’s important to separate all the items you use on an everyday basis into a box labelled essentials.

10. Get an extra pair of hands

Once you’ve packed all your things, it’s time to move them. This is probably the hardest part of a move and requires a reliable moving van and a few extra hands. At Stor-Age, you can hire a moving van for the day and one of our helpful drivers will help you move those heavier items. If you also purchase some of our packaging items, we will send everything in one trip for your convenience.
