Top home repair skills you should know

Thanks to the abundance of DIY TikTok and YouTube videos, everyone has the opportunity to learn a few helpful home repair skills. Yes, there are professionals who can do it for you, but this can sometimes be a costly process that you may not be able to afford. So, before phoning that high-priced professional, why not try your hand at learning these helpful skills.

Replacing an old shower head

You’ll know when it’s time for a new shower head. That dripping sound keeping you up at night has got to go. All you will need to complete this task is a wrench, a new shower head and some Teflon tape. Take off the old head, remove the old Teflon tape, add some new tape, and screw the new shower head on. IT’S THAT EASY!

Staining wooden floors

Mix your newly purchased stain well to ensure you end with a beautiful and consistent colour. Once you’re happy with the colour, you can start painting but make sure to go with the grain of the wood. Let the stain sit for about 15 minutes. Once the stain has set, wipe the remainder off with a rag and let the wood settle for at least four hours.

Fixing a noisy toilet

A noisy, leaky toilet is a sure-fire way to disrupt what could have been an excellent night's sleep. If running water is keeping you up at night, head to your nearest hardware store and pick up a toilet rebuild kit. These are great for beginner DIYers as they typically contain easy-to-follow instructions and require minimal tools.

Fixing a sticky window

Are you struggling to open the windows in your home? Dust, dirt, and pollen often become lodged in the tracks, resulting in sticky, hard-to-open windows. Grab a silicone-based lubricant from your nearest hardware store, spray it directly onto a dry cloth and wipe it along the inside and outside of the window tracks. Don’t forget to clean the tracks and window frame with a dry cloth to remove any loose dust and dirt first.
