Five Money Saving Hacks To Survive Winter In South Africa


Winter in South Africa is not what many countries experience, however we have our own challenges to beat the cold. As we live in a temperate climate our homes often do not have double-glazed windows or insulated walls. There is no central heating system and turning on under floor heating (if you have this) will drain your pockets quicker than they heat your feet. As South African's we have our own way of getting through winter, here are our top five money saving hacks to survive winter in South Africa.

1. Braai

A proper South African past time that many of us do not need a second invite to. Have a braai indoors to save on electricity, cook your supper and heat the home. You could also look at installing a dover, this will accomplish all of the above and may be a bit more welcome in the kitchen that your braai.

2. Make a snake
Drafts make their way under doors and can quickly make a house extremely cold. A simple way to stop this to roll up a towel and put it at the foot of the door. If you are feeling creative or want to keep the kids busy on a rainy day, then why not make your own 'doorsnake' by providing some old socks, towels, stuffing and other decorations.

3. Cuddle your pets
Having another warm body to generate heat is a great way to beat the winter blues. Pets usually love sleeping under blankets or on beds and would almost certainly welcome a little cuddle. Not only will this keep both of you warm but will help foster a loving relationship.

4. Coffee in bed

Take your flask to bed and double it up as a hot water bottle. Nothing beats the feeling of hot chocolate while wrapped up under the covers. The only problem you will have is deciding who gets out of bed to make round two of the hot chocolate supplies.

5. Get dressed
It's no secret that South African's love to save cash where possible, especially with the high cost of electricity. Layer your clothing as best as possible and invest in some decent slipper socks, gloves, beanies and scarves to keep yourself warm and your cash in your pocket.
