Preparing your home for the remaining winter months

With us now well into the winter months, in this blog post we share a few reminders of how to make sure the inside and outside of your home is ready to take on the remaining weeks of the wintery weather.

Preparing your home for the remaining winter months

  • Clean the gutters

While not a glamourous task, it is an important one to make sure that your home is ready to brave any remaining storms or cold fronts that comes your way. Gutters collect rain water and carry them to the drain. If there are blockages in your gutters, it means that water will collect and can cause damage to your roof. So, grab that ladder and get clearing!

  • Finish repairs

Any initial repairs you may have done at the end of summer may need to be looked at again, especially if you live in the Cape. Take a look at all the areas of your home, whether cracks, window frames or paint work, that may have been completed a few months ago to make sure the workmanship is holding firm. Take a look at the pipes outside your home as well as the winter wind may have unsettled some of them already.

  • Service the fireplace

If you have a fireplace, it may be time to get it serviced so that you can enjoy a smoke-free home for the remainder of winter. Getting your fireplace serviced will also prolong the lifespan of your fireplace.

  • Get winter linen and bedding

You may have braved the first few weeks without taking out your thicker winter linen and blankets. The latest cold spell may have prompted you to take them you, but if not now is a great time. There are still plenty of cold weeks ahead, especially if you live in the Highveld. Perhaps now is a good time to declutter your home of your summer linen and place them into self storage for when you need them again.

  • Candles

While a fire creates heat, lighting candles creates a warm atmosphere in your home and can help you destress after a long day. There is of course the added benefit of the scent you’ll bring into your home.

  • Fun indoor activities

Grab a couple of puzzles, board games and your favourite box set of DVD’s from storage to stock up for the remainder of winter. This will keep you entertained through those storms and frosty weekends.

If you are looking to declutter your home while you prepare for the remainder of winter, household self storage is the ideal solution. With us, you can safely storage your household items for as little as a month. Give us a call on 0861 18 18 18 and chat to a friendly member of our team.
