The Changing Use Of Mobile Over The Festive Season

The festive season has come and gone and most people are returning to work in order to make sure that 2015 gets off to a good start. One trend that most people in the digital space are backing is the continued growth of mobile access over desktop when using the internet. In fact there are now more active SIM cards in South Africa than there are people. (source: MMA South Africa). We spotted a few iPhone users at Stor-Age and noticed the change from iPhone 4 to 5 and then to 6 as the screen size got larger with each generation. At Stor-Age we are always thinking about storage space, however in this case it seems the trend is towards larger screens for better internet browsing.

The picture of the increasing size in iPhone's got us thinking and we did some digging of our own into mobile vs desktop usage statistics for the Stor-Age website. In other words, how are South Africans searching for self storage. We found a steady decrease in desktop access with the correlating increase in mobile usage as we got closer to the festive season, culminating in a high of nearly 38% mobile access in December 2014. Take a look at the table below to see the steady decline in desktop access of the Stor-Age website in 2014.

Naturally you would expect this trend as people began their holidays, left the desk and started using their mobile devices for their daily internet consumption. What does this mean for the average South African business? If you have not done so already make sure that your website is easily viewable on a mobile device.
