Top ways to truly declutter your mind

Do you have mental clutter living in your head rent free? Between juggling pressing work deadlines and family responsibilities, our minds can often become cluttered with all sorts of thoughts. If not dealt with regularly, negative thoughts will not only weigh you down emotionally but physically, too. Just like decluttering a crowded cupboard, you can also free up room in your mind and create a healthy and productive headspace. Here are a few simple but effective tips to help you get started.

1. Slow down and breathe

We often get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life. With numerous tasks tick off in a single day, it’s only normal for clutter to start to stream into your mental space and turn it upside down. While simple, learning to slow down, breathe and be present is an effective way to block out the noise and make sense of your thoughts and feelings.

2. Learn to let go

Like clutter in the home, our minds are filled with memories we can’t quite let go of. Sometimes the best way to discard a past mistake or painful regret is to dig it up from the bottom of your mind, face it head-on, and release it. An effective way to let go of pent-up anger or stress is to jot these feelings down in a journal or speak them aloud to a loved one.

3. Set boundaries

Without clear boundaries in place, there is nothing to stop unwanted feelings from piling up in your mind. Whether at home or work, it’s important to create boundaries and stick to them. This could mean closing your laptop at the end of the day or prioritising more important tasks over others so that you are not overwhelmed or stressed.

4. Live a healthy lifestyle

You can’t have a healthy mind without a healthy body. Getting enough sleep, exercising regularly and taking time out of your day to relax and unwind are all essential to a clutter-free mind. Removing yourself from a chaotic headspace will help put your thoughts into perspective and make it clear which ones you should discard or hold on to.

5. Declutter your surroundings

When your immediate environment is a mess, so is your mind. By simply decluttering and organising your physical space, you will feel a massive weight lifted off your shoulders and have the space to think freely and clearly. A clean and organised space is also conducive to productivity.

If you are ever feeling overwhelmed, it’s important that you speak to the professionals. Call up your GP to advise on a therapist, or if you already have one, then give them a ring and set up an appointment.
