5 money-saving student storage tips

Self storage for students is a cost-effective way to keep your things safe over the holidays, stash your seasonal items, or store things between moves.

We all know that times are tough. Save cash on student self storage by following these money-saving tips when you store your things.

1. Sort through your things first

The first step to saving money on storage is to be mindful of what you are storing. Carefully consider which items you actually want to store, which you can part with and which items you could keep with you. The fewer boxes you have to store (and transport), the cheaper it will be.

If you’re looking for specific size boxes we sell boxes at our Packaging Shop. You’ll also find locks, tape, bubble wrap and more.

2. Sell items you don’t need

It’s a sustainable practice to reuse old items but also to give them a second life while making money at the same time. Consider selling the items you don’t need and make some extra bucks.

A great way to sell your secondhand items is to advertise on your social media platforms or try Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree.

3. Find the right size storage unit

The price of your storage unit will depend on how much space you need. If you have a suitcase and a couple of boxes you could opt for the smallest size which would be the cheapest. Most students can get away with renting a six square metre storage unit, which could house the contents of a one- or two-bedroom flat.

4. Pack more efficiently

The right packing techniques can save you a lot of space. Here are some ways to pack your things more efficiently and save on space.

  1. Place smaller boxes within bigger ones.
  2. Pack in layers with heavier things on the bottom and lighter ones on top.
  3. Roll your clothes to save space and make sure they don’t wrinkle.
  4. Break down furniture to store it easily.

5. Share with a friend

If you don’t have a lot to store, consider splitting a unit with friends or housemates. Sharing means you pay less in rent, plus you have a helping hand when you’re moving your belongings.

How to store with a friend:

  1. Decide how you want to divide the space. Use tape on the floor as a way to mark your area and remember to label boxes correctly.
  2. Maximise your space by using vertical space as well as stacking boxes on top of each other.
  3. Keep a space down the middle to walk through.
