How to store sports equipment

Sports is a great way to keep in shape, socialise and get your endorphins flowing – but it’s also a key source of clutter. Whether you feel most alive in a five-foot barrel or on the golf course, when it’s time to pack it up for the day, where exactly do you store your gear? Without a garage or secure self storage facility nearby, cupboards, drawers and even bathroom floors can become overrun by sports equipment. So, we’ve come up with a few simple storage solutions that’ll help you keep your gear off the floor and ready for action.

1. Organise your gear into groups

If you’re a sports fanatic or have kids with ranging interests, then chances are you have hoards of equipment lying around the house. If not stored away properly, it’ll not only take hours to track down but you could also risk losing or damaging the prized and pricey equipment. Begin by arranging your gear into various groups; storing all balls in one area, rackets and bats in another and so on. Use this opportunity to also get rid of any broken items or to donate equipment that you or the kids have outgrown.

2. Use racks for large items

Bicycles and boards are notoriously difficult to store. Not only are they big and bulky but they are also very expensive and can’t simply be left outside when there isn’t enough space. For these bigger items, it’s best to get creative with your wall or ceiling space. By hanging a few hardy hooks or installing one or two racks, you can easily store these items above ground and out of the way. This is also a trendy way to showcase a cool board or bicycle design.

3. Pack small items into storage bins

Storage bins are excellent for items like balls, helmets or pads that are small and easy to lose. Storage bins come in all colours, shapes and sizes, allowing you to customise them for your space and gear. Whether you label or colour code each box, it’s a good idea to group the same gear into one bin to save time when searching for an item. Before placing your gear in here, make sure that each item is clean and dry – you can also leave the lid slightly ajar to allow airflow.

4. Install shelving and hooks

Vertical storage such as shelving is a smart and cost-effective way to make the most out of a small space. You can install floating shelves in your garage or spare room, or even use a shoe hamper behind your door to neatly store sports shoes without stinking up your closet. A few hooks can also be used to hang shirts, jackets and even helmets.

5. Rent a self storage unit

One of the best ways to store your sports gear without compromising your living space is by renting a self storage unit. Many facilities are located in the centre of residential areas, making it a quick and easy pitstop to and from a game. There is also a range of different unit sizes that you can choose from, so you can store exactly what you need without having to pay for unnecessary space.
