The most important things to do when moving house

Are you in the process of moving house? Whether it's your first time or you've done it a million times, there are some key things that you need to do to make the move as smooth as possible. From packing to changing your address, we cover the most important things to do when moving house.

Finalise all contracts

This includes your sale/lease agreement, transferring your utilities and cancelling any subscriptions or memberships you no longer want. Always make copies or save a digital copy.

Arrange a final walkthrough

Whether you’re buying or renting, arrange a final walkthrough of the property before moving day to ensure all agreed-upon repairs have been completed to your satisfaction.

Start decluttering

Getting rid of items you no longer want or use can save time and energy when moving house, allowing you to start fresh with only the items you really want and need.

Pack everything up

Work room by room to make packing up your entire home less daunting. Don’t forget to stock up on quality packaging materials beforehand to make the packing process smoother.

Change your address

Make sure to change the address on all bills and statements. Most companies allow you to do this online, but it’s best to get it done in the week before you move in case of any hiccups.

Do a deep clean

As you pack up a room, finish off with a deep clean. Vacuum and mop the floors, wash the windows and wipe down the cupboards. Cleaning the inside of each cupboard and drawer will also ensure that nothing gets left behind.

Clean the fridge

Remove all shelves and drawers and give them a good scrub to remove all sticky spills and rings. A solution of equal parts water and vinegar (with a dash of lemon) is a great all-purpose, chemical-free cleaner.

Arrange for a child or pet sitter

Moving while keeping an eye on kids or pets is stressful. If possible, arrange to have a child or pet sitter for the day of the move to keep them safe and out of harm’s way.

Pack an essentials box for each family member

To make the first night comfortable, pack in a change of clothes and underwear, pyjamas, toiletries (including a towel), your tablet/laptop/phone and charger, medication and your favourite book (or toy for kids) to help you relax on your first night.

Make the bed

On moving day, make it a priority to make the beds first so you and your family can easily relax after a long day. Also ensure all bedrooms have curtains or blinds to prevent any accidental neighbour flashings.
