Top Tips To Maximise Your Storage Space
Packing and storing your valuables can be quite a task and we often don't realise how much we have accumulated until we decide to move, renovate or finally clear up the garage and spare room. Here are a few top tips to maximise your storage space.
- If you plan or need to frequently use the space, a larger space may be more convenient than one packed to capacity
- Plan your space - start with bulky items and your heaviest boxes, stacking from the back of your unit making your way to the front; put those items that you need to get to most often near the front, close to the door
- Place heavy or bulky items in the unit first to provide a good stacking base
- To maximise space, stack similar sized boxes together and allow for walkways; pack all odd shaped items last as it’s usually hard to stack around them
- Pack your belongings in good quality boxes, filling all boxes to capacity, as partially full or bulging boxes may tip or collapse; remember we provide a complete packaging solution
- Pack according to the season
- Pack heavy items into small boxes so that they are easy to lift
- Label or number all boxes on all four sides for easy identification
- Try to keep boxes in uniform sizes as these are much easier to stack
- Make up an inventory of your stored items and keep it in a safe place at home
- There are prohibited goods that may not be stored at Stor-Age; common sense and laws determine what may be stored; check with us if you are unsure
- Protect your fragile goods in bubble wrap
- Dishes and glasses should be individually wrapped in tissue paper or bubble wrap before storing; fill all pockets with packing material; label all boxes containing glassware, and do not place heavy items on boxes containing glassware
- Furniture with drawers can be utilised as storage places for china, silverware and small items; wrap in tablecloths, towels or blankets to prevent breakage
- Stack sofas/couches on their ends to create more space
- Wrap table legs with bubble wrap before storing
- Tables may appear large but remember that you can pack around and on top of them - legs can also often be removed
- Wardrobe boxes allow you to store your clothing on hangers which keeps their shape
- Do not place heavy items on sofas or mattresses
- If you stand mattresses on end, be sure to "prop" them up
- Food crumbs or stains should be removed before self storage to avoid storing anything that may attract pests
- Always place a protective cover over your soft furnishings
- Stack chairs seat to seat with cloth or paper to separate them
- Ensure that your refrigerator or freezer is thoroughly dry and stored with its doors open for ventilation
- Ensure that stoves and cooking equipment are cleaned before they are stored
- Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in boxes, marked fragile and stacked on their end
- Avoid stacking or leaning furniture against outside walls to aid ventilation
- Cover your goods with dust sheets to protect against dust
- Pack books flat to protect their spines
- Clean all garden equipment before storing
- Bicycles and other metal items will rust over time if not protected; to prevent rust, wipe all metal surfaces with proper agent
- Secure your unit with one of our high quality padlocks
