Things that can and can’t be stored in a self storage unit

Renting a self storage unit is a great way to free up space at home or work, whether you're decluttering, renovating or running a small business. But what can you store in a storage unit? And just as importantly, what is not allowed in a storage unit? For safety, hygiene and legal reasons, there are clear rules and regulations on what’s permitted — and what’s not.

In this guide, we break down what you can and can’t store in a Stor-Age self storage unit, so that you can use your space confidently and responsibly.

What you can’t store in a self storage unit

While storage units offer secure and flexible space, there are a few self storage prohibited items. These restrictions are there to protect your belongings, your neighbours, and our staff. Let's look at some of the storage unit safety tips on restricted items.

1. Hazardous materials

You cannot store anything flammable, toxic or explosive. Examples of items not allowed in storage units include:

  • Petrol or diesel
  • Paint thinner or turpentine
  • Any container with gas

These self storage prohibited items pose a serious fire and health risk and are strictly forbidden.

2. Living things

No, you can’t live in your self storage unit! Living plants or animals are not allowed to be stored in our storage units and you can’t use it as a bedroom. Animals need food, water and ventilation and plants need light and care. Living things can also cause moisture, mould, odours or attract pests.

3. Perishable food

Can you store food in a storage unit? Perishable food is not allowed in our storage units, and for good reason. We are proud to offer a clean and pest-free self storage experience. Food spoils and will eventually create quite the smell, attracting insects and pests. You can store dry food in sealed, pest-proof containers — but always check with your Stor-Age store first.

Example of food items you can’t store:

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Dairy products
  • Meat or seafood

4. Illegal items or restricted items

What else can't you store in a storage unit? Anything illegal or restricted by law. This includes:

  • Firearms and ammunition
  • Unregistered or stolen vehicles
  • Cash and securities (this isn’t Breaking Bad)
  • Illegal drugs or substances (obviously)
  • Counterfeit goods or contraband
  • Waste
  • Radioactive materials

If an item is illegal to own or sell in South Africa, please don’t try to store it with us. We work closely with SAPS to ensure our stores remain safe and secure.

What you can store in a self storage unit

Wondering what items are safe to store long-term? Self storage is ideal for a wide range of personal and business needs. Here are the most common (and safe) items:

1. Seasonal items

”sorting

Make space at home by rotating seasonal belongings in and out of storage, such as:

  • Holiday decorations
  • Winter clothing and bedding
  • Summer camping gear or beach equipment

This is a simple way to stay organised year-round.

2. Household goods

Self storage is the answer to how to safely store household items including:

  • Furniture
  • Clothing and shoes
  • Books, décor and personal items

3. Business supplies

Storage units are a cost-effective solution for small businesses or home offices. Don’t clutter your office space when there is a more convenient solution. Some of the items thousands of businesses in South Africa store in our units include:

  • Items they sell online Archived documents and records
  • Tools and equipment
  • Stock they only need at certain times of the month/year (like a local market)

Our business storage solutions are designed to help you run your business efficiently, with flexible access and reliable security.

4. Electronics

”electronics

Is it safe to store electronics in a storage unit? Yes, if packed correctly. You can store:

  • TVs and monitors
  • Laptops and printers
  • Gaming consoles and audio equipment
  • Office equipment

Remember to remove batteries and we always advise on labelling cords and using original packaging where possible to keep devices protected and avoid misplacing key components.  To help protect your items even more, we sell a variety of affordable packaging products at each of our stores.

5. Appliances

You can store most home appliances, provided they are properly cleaned and dried first. Suitable items include:

  • Fridges and freezers
  • Air Fryers
  • Microwaves
  • Blenders and juicers
  • Washing machines and tumble dryers

Always defrost and unplug appliances before storing them to prevent water damage and mould.  For fridges and freezer, we recommend that you leave the door open slightly so that they can air.
