How to prep your furniture for self storage
Moving furniture into a self storage unit can be tough on the back, but without the proper preparation, it can also wreak havoc on your furniture. From keeping your favourite leather armchair supple to protecting your gorgeous oak table from mould, we show you how to properly prep your furniture for self storage.
Do a deep clean
Although deep cleaning furniture is simple, it does require a bit of time and effort. Start by vacuuming all surfaces to remove packed dust and dirt before gently cleaning hard surfaces with a mild soap and water solution to remove stains and sticky residue.
Use material-specific protective products
When preparing furniture, using a generic all-purpose cleaner can actually do more harm than good. Invest in cleaning products designed for glass, metal, leather, wood or upholstery to avoid damaging the finish and drying out the piece - wood and leather in particular.
Disassemble your items
By removing all removable parts and taking apart the frames, you can prevent scratches, dents, and other types of damage from occurring when furniture is moved or stored in a tight space.
Carefully wrap each piece
Furniture covers are your best friend, but avoid using plastic covers directly against wood or leather as it can cause the furniture to 'sweat', resulting in mould. You can also use old linens to cover bulky items, such as bookcases or cabinets. Ensure all furniture is 100% dry before wrapping.
Create a floor plan
Preparation is more than cleaning. By mapping out where everything will be placed within the unit, you can maximise space, pack items with enough room to prevent 'sweating', and store the pieces you'll need first right in front for easy removal down the line.
