Tips to manage waste and improve sustainability at home

Sustainability continues to be a growing focus around the world, with many more people becoming increasingly aware of the consequences of single-use items and more concerned about recycling.

Managing waste and improving sustainability in your home is a small but effective way of making an impact on the world. It’s great for the whole family as everyone can get involved and creative in reducing your carbon footprint.

Here are a few ideas on how to manage waste and improve sustainability in your home.

Reduce single-use plastic

Did you know that every day around 8 million pieces of plastic makes their way into our oceans? By reducing the amount of single-use plastic that you use, you can reduce the amount of waste that is harming our environment. Invest in reusable items such as a water bottle, lunch containers and material shopping bags.

Recycle and reuse where possible

Recycling is one of the easiest ways to make a difference and manage waste. Set up a bin for plastic, organic, glass and metal waste and make an effort to separate your rubbish before throwing it out. You may find that some items can even be reused!

Repair instead of throwing out

Before you throw out items that you think no longer have a use, think about whether you’ll need them in the future. If the item is broken, first see if it can be repaired before you buy a new one. You can also keep unused items in a safe and secure storage unit in case you need them again in the future.

Create a compost site

Organic waste can be put to good use in the form of compost and fertiliser. There are several ways to create a compost heap. For example, you can start your compost pile on bare earth or start a worm garden.
