Tips to help settle down in South Africa

South Africa is a beautiful, vibrant country with a melting pot of culture, a stunning natural landscape and a spirited entrepreneurial landscape. If you’re moving to South Africa from another country, we’d like to say welcome!

While settling into a new country is always exciting, it also introduces unique challenges. Here are a few tips to help you settle into South Africa and make it your new home.

Do a site visit!

Before heading to our beautiful country, make sure you visit us first to take a look at areas that you would consider home, get a feel for the culture and make sure that it’s the right fit for you.

Have the basics pre-prepared

Before you touch South African soil, it’s important to have a few details set up. A bank account, accommodation and medical aid are three important considerations to have ironed out before arrival. Something to consider is your cellular contract. Aim to research each of these so that you are ready to go before you even leave.

Be a tourist for a while

There’s no better way to discover your surroundings than by playing tourist for a while. While you may have visited us during a site visit, take some time to enjoy your new home and your surroundings. In Cape Town, you can book the Red Bus Tour and take a trip around the coastline. In Johannesburg, you can book a tour of Soweto or many of the other cultural experiences. There are so many fun and enriching activities to experience, food to taste and people to meet - so don’t hold back!

Find a place to store your extra belongings

When you arrive in a new country, you normally have your luggage that was on the plane and that’s it. Depending on your circumstances, your furniture and other belongings will arrive over time. Until you find a permanent place to settle, you’ll need a safe and secure space to keep your belongings. A self storage unit is the perfect solution for affordability and convenience.

Get advice from colleagues

If you’ve relocated for work purposes, then you’re lucky enough to already have a group of people to give you a sense of the local community. Be friendly and don’t be shy to ask them for tips on where to eat, places to go and areas to avoid.

Establish a routine as quickly as possible

When you’re travelling for holiday, you’re moving from one attraction to another, with little time for rest. When you’re immigrating, you intend to settle down to start a season of your life. With this in mind, it’s useful to get into a routine as quickly as possible. For example, find a local gym, get familiar with your local grocery store, and map out your running route.

At Stor-Age, we strive to make the moving process as easy as possible. We offer conveniently located units across the country, offering a safe and secure space to keep your household belongings. Call us at 0861 18 18 18 to find out more, or get a quick and easy quote online.
