This is how you build an organisation that sparks lasting change
One idea can change a life, a community and even the world. Scientists Thandeka Mhlanga and Thulile Kanyile built the non-profit Nka’Thuto Edu Propeller on this belief. With STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths) out of reach for many learners in South Africa’s disadvantaged communities, they began hosting workshops that sparked innovation and gave light to bold and brilliant breakthroughs. Today, the driven duo have empowered thousands of learners with the knowledge and skills to become changemakers in their communities. This is how they did it:
1. Find the right team
To succeed, you need the right people by your side. When starting out, make sure that you team up with partners and associates that align with your vision and complement your skillset. With the right team, you can make a real difference.
2. Remember the why
Always remember why you started the initiative in the first place. This will not only drive you through the difficult times but make the decision-making process easier. Whenever you are at a crossroads, remember the greater purpose of your organisation and let it guide you.
3. Manage your funds
Keep your financial reports up to date and audited as this forms part of due diligence for donors in terms of reviewing how you manage funds.
4. Aim for sustainability
For your business or organisation to survive, it needs to be able to stand on its own. While we depend on donor funding, we are also a registered pty which allows us to commercialise and distribute some of the ideas which are incubated within the NPO.
5. Always strive for more
To make a tangible difference, you need to continue to strive for more. Whether it be the number of communities impacted or the funds raised, set goals for yourself and always try to surpass them.
