How to correctly store a piano in a self storage unit
A piano can add a lot of character to a room, and if you know how to play one they can become a hit during parties at home. There may come a time though when that piano needs to be moved or stored, whether it’s because you’re moving home, renovating or downsizing.
It’s no surprise that pianos can be expensive and so it is important that you protect them when they go into storage. Heat, humidity and dirt accumulation can damage the appearance of your instrument as well as its mechanics. A great place to store a piano is of course in a self storage unit.
How to correctly store your piano in self storage
- First, clean it with a damp cloth and polish the outer surfaces. Wipe down the keys and keep out the dust by placing a cloth over the keys before closing the lid.
- Place a nylon bag of chewing tobacco inside the piano to help prevent any moisture damage.
- Cover the piano with a cotton sheet or piece of plastic will help to avoid any dust from settling.
- Don’t pay for room you don’t need. Work out the right amount of space that you’ll need for the piano, bearing in mind you could store other items in the unit as well.
- We would suggest placing a carpet or a rug under the piano before moving it into the storage unit. It may sound obvious but make sure you store the piano on its feet!
- Pianos are heavy so consider using a reliable moving company to help move it from your home into your storage unit. You don’t want to damage the piano or injure yourself.
